Greta was discharged from her chemo treatment late last Saturday but continued to have mystery fevers over the weekend. As a result, she had difficulty sleeping and no appetite. At their scheduled clinic visit on Monday the doctors ruled out any possible issues and determined that the fevers were likely a side effect of the chemo drugs. By Tuesday her fever broke and she was able to catch up on much-needed sleep. When she finally woke up, Sarah asked her how she felt, to which she responded “perfect.”

On Thursday, Greta had a full day. She was able to meet (virtually) with her teacher, and later attend a clinic visit, which went well. Her doctor indicated that unless her blood test deviates significantly, she is on track for surgery next week. She also received some good news about her post-surgery treatment plan. She will need four rounds of chemo after her surgery, however after the first two rounds, she will be able to phase out the drug that causes the more severe side effects. This will allow her to do the final rounds as clinic visits instead of hospital stays. As much as the family appreciates the amazing care from doctors and staff at the hospital, it’s much nicer to recover in their own home with their family together! In the meantime, everyone is working to fatten Greta up before surgery. She does not have much of an appetite, but she’s acquiesced when presented with food, nutrition drinks, and the sort. Apparently, a backyard squirrel has even gone out of its way to bring her food. It appeared at her window on Wednesday with a piece of pizza in its mouth!! Next week will be a pivotal point in Greta’s treatment. Please continue to hold her and her family in your thoughts and in your heart as they move forward toward recovery and recuperation.
